Have you always dreamed of exploring the Balkans, but never quite knew where to begin? Then this might just be the adventure you’ve been waiting for! Crossing four of the region’s most fascinating countries, TRANSBALKAN takes you far beyond the familiar tourist routes, along spectacular wilderness trails, breathtaking mountain ridges and some of the Balkans’ most remarkable natural and cultural landmarks. One night you might find yourself camping beneath a million stars, surrounded by nothing but pristine mountain wilderness; the next, enjoying the warmth of traditional hospitality at a charming, family-run ethno retreat. And while this expedition isn’t about pushing your vehicle or driving skills to their absolute limits, expect just enough offroad excitement to get your adrenaline flowing – and that exhilarating feeling of venturing into places where few travellers ever dare to go!

Our TRANSBALKAN adventure kicks off in the shadow of the magnificent Rila Monastery, one of Bulgaria’s most celebrated cultural treasures, right at the gateway to Rila National Park. But we won’t be staying in the valleys for long! Soon, our trail climbs towards the highest legally accessible offroad trail in Bulgaria, reaching an impressive 2,570 metres above sea level. Just below the mountain pass, at around 2,540 metres, we’ll set up camp beside a natural spring, surrounded by breathtaking high-altitude scenery. With sweeping panoramas of the mighty Rila and Pirin mountains – two of the highest mountain ranges in the Balkans – this promises to be one of those unforgettable nights when the wilderness feels almost within touching distance of the sky.
Leaving the spectacular heights of Rila behind, we’ll make our way through Blagoevgrad before plunging into the deep, enchanting forests of the Osogovo Mountains, stretching along Bulgaria’s border with North Macedonia. A network of wonderfully scenic woodland trails will lead us to our next wilderness campsite, setting the stage for yet another remarkable mountain adventure. The following day, we’ll climb towards the impressive high-altitude ridge of Mount Ruen (2,252 m), the highest summit of the Osogovo range and the third-highest point accessible by vehicle in Bulgaria. Up here, the dense forests give way to wide-open mountain landscapes, rewarding us with magnificent views and that unmistakable feeling of freedom that makes overlanding so addictive.

Descending from the magnificent heights of Ruen doesn’t mean we’re saying goodbye to Bulgaria’s mountains just yet! More scenic trails and beautiful mountain landscapes await as we wind our way towards the Ribartsi border crossing, where we’ll enter Serbia – the second country of our TRANSBALKAN adventure, and the one in which we’ll spend the largest part of our journey. Before long, we’ll arrive at the enchanting Vlasina Lake, a peaceful mountain reservoir surrounded by rolling green hills and unspoilt nature. Here, a spectacular lakeside campsite awaits us – the perfect place to unwind, soak up the scenery and enjoy another memorable evening under the Balkan stars.
Welcome to Serbia – perhaps the Balkans’ best-kept secret! Our journey through this surprisingly diverse country takes us across an extraordinary succession of mountain ranges, each with its own distinctive character and hidden treasures. From the forested slopes of Čemernik and Kukavica, through the majestic landscapes of Kopaonik National Park, and onward across Čemerno, the pristine wilderness of Golija Nature Park and the mountains of Javor, the scenery never stops changing. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, the breathtaking Jadovnik Mountains and the spectacular Uvac Lakes reveal yet another side of Serbia’s remarkable natural beauty. Endless mountain trails, remote valleys, sweeping panoramas and landscapes largely untouched by mass tourism – this is the Serbia that few international travellers ever get to experience!

Leaving Serbia behind, we cross into Montenegro – the third country of our TRANSBALKAN expedition, and a true paradise for mountain lovers! Here, the landscape takes on an increasingly dramatic, almost Alpine character, as we explore some of the most spectacular high-altitude trails in the entire Balkan region. Our route focuses on the magnificent mountains of northern Montenegro, including Bjelasica and the legendary Durmitor National Park, taking us once again beyond the 2,000-metre mark. With towering peaks, vast open highlands, deep glacial valleys and crystal-clear mountain lakes scattered across the landscape, Montenegro offers an almost endless succession of picture-perfect panoramas. Its mountain trails are among the most scenic you’ll find anywhere in the Balkans – and with so much of our journey unfolding high above the valleys, you’ll sometimes feel as though you’re driving across the roof of the world!
And just when you think the Balkans couldn’t possibly get any more spectacular, welcome to Bosnia and Herzegovina – the fourth and final country of our adventure! The mighty Dinaric Alps continue to unfold before us, revealing yet another extraordinary world of rugged peaks, pristine forests and seemingly endless mountain wilderness. One of our highlights will be an unforgettable journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Zelengora, in Sutjeska National Park, before we arrive at a truly remarkable mountain retreat perched high above the dramatic Tara Canyon. Imagine relaxing in a swimming pool that seems to spill straight over the edge of the cliffs, with cosy A-frame cabins and a dizzying panorama stretching out before you! For those craving an extra dose of excitement, the resort offers activities such as horseback riding and a spectacular zipline suspended between two rocky pinnacles, with a seemingly bottomless abyss beneath your feet. But our adventure doesn’t end there! For the grand finale, we’ll venture deep into the vast, remote highlands of central Bosnia, following hidden mountain tracks and discovering isolated villages where traditional ways of life have survived for generations. A fitting conclusion to fourteen extraordinary days of exploration across four of Europe’s most fascinating countries – and a journey you’ll remember long after the dust has settled!

We will alternate between campsites deep in the wilderness, and occasional bungalow/room accommodation offered by the local community (not included in the tour price). We will have firewood in abundance, so we will have an opportunity to light campfires wherever we can do it safely, which can also be used for grilling. We will attempt to arrive at the campsite every day no later than 17:00, so that you have plenty of time to setup your little nomadic heaven and prepare for the night, enjoying the beautiful surroundings to the fullest. We usually leave the campsite at 9:00, leaving us enough time for a relaxed breakfast and packing up all the equipment afterwards .
Altitudes of the campsites will vary from around 700 m, to as high as 2540 m, which means that nights can get chilly in some places. But overall, during this midsummer tour, we expect pleasant night temperatures, which will most of the time be in the range 10-15 C.
Replenishing our food supplies and refueling will be possible 4-5 times during the tour, as we descend to some small towns. Therefore we recommend that you equip your vehicle with large capacity / good quality compressor refrigerator, so that you can keep your food fresh over several days.
Every day we will make a lunchbreak sometime between 12:00 and 13:30 lasting for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, so there will be plenty of time to prepare a decent lunch.
